Excusing an Absence or Tardy

To clear your child’s attendance please email the attendance office at SUHI.Attendance@sweetwaterschools.org.

  • Information to include when contacting the Attendance Office:
    • Student’s Name
    • Student’s Date of Birth
    • The date and period that they were marked absent/tardy
    • Explanation for the absence
    • Parent’s name who is reporting the absence
    • If this absence or tardy is for a medical or dental appointment, please include a note from a doctor’s office as proof. Also, if necessary, remember to also notify our school Health office of any medical issues.
  • Students can not excuse their own absence. It must be a Parent or Guardian.
  • Students should email their teachers when they are going to be absent to let them know.
  • Students are still responsible for work that they miss when they are absent.

EXAMPLE OF AN EMAIL FROM A PARENT TO CLEAR ATTENDANCE:

Dear Mr. Martinez,

My student, John Smith (insert student name), will be absent today due to a funeral (insert reason). Their birthday is 1/5/12 (insert birthday). My name is Pattie Smith, I am his mother (insert parent name). Please call me at 619-474-9710 with any questions (insert parent phone number).

Thank you,

Ms. Smith

Early Student Release

Students leaving the school early must be picked up by a parent (guardian) or an adult listed on the student’s emergency contact list on Infinite Campus. It is a faster process if the parent or guardian comes into the Attendance office to fill out the Off Campus Permit before school begins.  This way the student will have the off campus pass and can show it to the teacher at the time pre-determined by the parent or guardian. No off-campus passes will be permitted after 3:15 pm.  Again, a parent ID is required at the time of release

Mistakenly Marked Absent

If your student believes they may have been mistakenly marked absent please have your student come to the Attendance office to pick up an Attendance Correction Form.

For Short Term Independent Contracts and Struggles with Attendance, please contact:

  • Sara Osmus, Assistant Principal
    • Phone: (619) 474-9710
    • Email: sara.osmus@sweetwaterschools.org

Please call or email (preferred) to make an appointment with Ms. Osmus for:

  • A Short Term Independent Study Contract (Excused Absence up to 15 days) is needed
  • Your student is struggling with attendance
  • Need Saturday School information:

Saturday School

Saturday school is intended for students to clear absences if they have not cleared their absences/tardies within 30 days.

  • Time: 8:00am – 12:00pm (Doors close at 8:00am)
  • Please see the Saturday School Calendar here.
  • One Saturday school clears:
    • A full day of absence plus 8 tardies, OR
    • 3 single period absences plus 8 tardies

For Saturday School, students must bring:

  • their backpack with work
  • books
  • laptop/device

Saturday School attendance does not make up for missed classwork.

Please check your teacher’s syllabus as absences may impact citizenship grade, regardless of clearing them at Saturday school.

Overall Attendance Expectations

The Sweetwater Union High School District has the expectation that students will be in school on days that are scheduled to be in school, according to the SUHSD Student Calendar. If your family takes a trip, please plan according to your student’s vacation schedule to avoid missing more than 10% of instructional days.
