The Asian Pacific Youth Leadership Project (APYLP) is a non-profit organization that sponsors a statewide conference for high school juniors and seniors. In this conference, you will have an opportunity to participate in group workshops on:

• leadership development
• cultural identity and awareness
• the legislative process
• public speaking skills

As a participant you will also be able to:

• participate in mock legislative sessions
• hear from elected officials and prominent speakers from the Asian and Pacific Islander community

A total of fifty juniors and seniors will be selected from STATEWIDE applicants to participate in this conference on April 11-14, 2019 in Sacramento. The APYLP will pay ALL EXPENSES for the participants including:

• travel
• lodging
• meals

Participants complete “tasks” of their choice for a variety of open source software projects.

Students can earn t-shirts, digital certificates, and hooded sweatshirts for their work.

Grand prize winners receive a four day trip to Google in Mountain View, CA, USA the following summer!

Open source development is much more than just computer programming! There are lots of different kinds of tasks to choose from including:

1. Coding: ​Writing or refactoring code.
2. Documentation/Training:​ Creating and editing documentation and helping others learn.
3. Outreach/Research​: Community management and outreach/marketing, or studying problems and recommending solutions.
4. Quality Assurance:​ Testing to ensure code is of high quality.
5. Design:​ Designing visual aspects of pages and user accessibility.

This full cost of attendance scholarship will be awarded to a  SUHI Class of 2019 senior to attend the University of Colorado, Boulder in pursuit of a Bachelor of Science degree in any major within the college’s College of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

The scholarship was established by the Morgan Family Foundation in partnership with the University of Colorado Foundation.

Our Safe Place

A welcoming community center for youth up to age 21 and their families.

One of San Diego’s most vulnerable populations, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning (LGBTQ) youth, often suffer because of non-supportive or even hostile environments in their homes, schools, and communities. Located at SBCS Trolley Trestle Youth Hub, Our Safe Place (OSP) provides a wide variety of services for youth and their families, including support for alcohol and drug abuse, coming out, depression, family relationships, gender identity, sexual health, safe dating and transitioning.

Our Safe Place is a collaborative program with San Diego Youth Services and the YMCA of San Diego County. Each partner provides a drop-in center and San Diego Youth Services also provides a mental health clinic. The program is funded by the County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency.

Pre-university students ages 13 to 17 are invited to take part in Google Code-in: Our global, online contest introducing teenagers to the world of open source development. With a wide variety of bite-sized tasks, it’s easy for beginners to jump in and get started no matter what skills they have.

Mentors from Google’s participating organizations lend a helping hand as participants learn what it’s like to work on an open source project. Participants get to work on real software and win prizes from t-shirts to a trip to Google HQ!
